A friend and I …
A friend and I regularly fly electric R/C planes. No variometer but I've actually seen the planes enter the cloud base. I've even done that with a $29.00 2-axis bird sold as the Yellowbee.

We're working on getting a camera up.

What vario did you …
What vario did you use for this? I'm thinking of posting a FPV system to my plane and the vario is great.

great video. you …
great video. you must have great eyesight.
What does a spotter do? does he have a binoculas to follow your glider?
Have you tried taking photos at this altitude?

Good video. …
Good video. However the pop ups with the red back ground are obnoxious. Especially the ones with the web address. That will cost you a star. Otherwise, good job.

No wireless video, …
No wireless video, just plain old eyesight. I regularly fly at 3000 feet altitude but havent made a video. Guess ill do that next.

are you using a wireless video setup? Or is this a simple on-board recording?

cularis is a cool plane, get it set up right and its a real floater!

well done
well done

Maximum height that …
Maximum height that a model can be flown appears to depend on its mass - CAP658 states that a model exceeding 7kg cannot fly higher than 400ft and that permission must be obtained from the air traffic service unit if flown in Class A,B,C or D airspace.
As for causing damage to a light aircraft - if a model aircraft collided with a light aircraft it could cause considerable damage (consider the damage caused by a birdstrike). A large model could destroy a light aircraft.

Before strapping …
Before strapping the camera to the plane and flying at altitude I spent quite a bit of effort investigating what is and isn't legal, and I'm happy to say that I'm within the law.

To prevent any 'incidents' I do two things. 1) use my eyes and ears, and 2) have a spotter with me.

Hi guys, thanks for …
Hi guys, thanks for the comments. If you go to the Civil Aviation Site and look up CAP658, it specifies what you can and can't do with a model aircraft, including maximum altitudes and controlled airspace.

I'm actually in controlled airspace here (Cat D) and am fully compliant with the CAA regulations.

Cool! What's the …
Cool! What's the beeping all about? Is it something to do with the attitude?

I seriously doubt an electric RC plane would damage a full size plane. It would simply be chopped into millions of small pieces, so darthsmidge: relax.

darthsmidge @ 1:33 am

i belive it would …
i belive it would cause some serious damage (and a of a lot of paperwork) if not requiring a bail-out if this were a sufficiantly large aircraft and carrying fuel. so go out and have fun with your model aircraft but do consider how high you are flying and the other real piolts who have to worry about their lives not just a model.

darthsmidge @ 1:33 am

i hope you took …
i hope you took into consideration real-life piolts here? 2000ft is high for a model aircraft i presume? but not for a normal light aircraft, and im not sure i would be very happy (or would you) if this model were to strike a light aircraft

jeezz….not even one roll or loop ?

davefcy @ 1:33 am

Yes, assuming …
Yes, assuming theres a safe place to takeoff and land from. I need a grassy field about 70m long forthe landing and landowners permission.

COULD YOU FLY THIS …
COULD YOU FLY THIS AROUND NORTHWICH?

davefcy @ 1:33 am

Hi, yes it's a …
Hi, yes it's a Multiplex Cularis. for the variometer just google to buy a picolario. You'll find a few dealers in the UK and germany.

davefcy @ 1:33 am

This is not a black …
This is not a black and white answer, though in my case I do not need permission.
Chesk out CAP658 on the CAA website for details.

jarikcbol @ 1:33 am

do you have to get …
do you have to get permision to fly that high?

M4800 @ 1:33 am

Hey I am curious …
Hey I am curious where you got the variometer. I need one just like this for a project im working on. Thanks!

Great video! Very nice that you put the comments on and a very good display of the gliding capability. Is this a Multiplex Cularis?
Cheers,
