How to seal an RC engine from air leaks

This video is on how to seal a rc engine against air leaks in the back plate, carb, and needles. There is a follow on video on how to test for air leaks under this account that you might want to check out. The follow on thread is posted on the forum at the toyz under squirrel

do u have a video …
do u have a video on how to seal a fuel tank

comp great. Sealed …
comp great. Sealed everything, not hot or over 250 max, may be front bearing. Could a worng glowplug do this

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

airleaks cause you …
airleaks cause you to run extremely lean and hot. Doing the above will stop any air from coming in on those surfaces which are common to error. It will not fix bearing leaks, cracked cases, cooling heads not set right, etc. Also, there are other conditions that could be going on which is why you want to diagnose a leak first. So,my question is do you have fuel leaking anywhere, were you running hot, what made you do this mod, and how is your compression?

hi i have a picco …
hi i have a picco 21 max engine and have followed your vid and sealed the backplate and carb, also locking pin. And i used the green slime on my high low and idle.. My stock needle settings are suppose to be at 3.5 for the high speed and mines at 7 and the low speed is also realy rich. But then it runs good at 220-250 degrees.???????

and the green stuff

High temp …
High temp automotive gasket matterial.

what sealent do you use

where should i get it from if i live in the u.k?

footballplyer125 @ 12:02 pm

can u seal by the …
can u seal by the crankcase. wat do u use to. my rc car has a air leak b the crankcase

jameswil @ 12:02 pm

hi im not sure if …
hi im not sure if you can help me but i have got a sh.28 engine but a while ago i flipped my truck and the engine dug in grass and was ripped out when i bought a new mount the engine would run but when i revved high it would cut out, i had no loss of power in low revs.

i noticed oil/fuel on the front bearing so i stripped my engine and replaced the bearing.

but the problem is now still the same, i noticed the high speed needle was loose so i have replaced the o-ring

any idea what else to try?

It ran great for …
It ran great for breakin and for about a half a tank of fuel after that. All of the sudden it lost power and the temps started to rise so I began to richen the needles to bring the temps back down.

This only made the loss of power worse and slightly lowered the temps.

By now it is so rich it barely runs but the temps are hovering at about 260-280.

Any attempt to lean the needle, even 1 hour, results in more power, but the temps shoot up.

Its part of the fun …
Its part of the fun of the nitro hobby. Try a little, run it on a test bed (in your case that you found a leak on the first roll over), and then fix it prior to break in.

I personally would inspect your needles, seal if you want, and put the needle at factory settings. Then try again. Hopefully your luck will be better =)

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

It is not unusual …
It is not unusual for a new engine to perform that way. I had a OS .30, Picco .27, and more, that were a pain to start, no power, and slobbering rich or lean with fuel pouring out of the pipe. It is up to the hobbyist to tune for the break in and to recognize the lean/ rich state, compensate to their break in preference (new school, traxxas, what the manual states, etc), etc.

Also, it is very common to do something, try it before break in and start the engine, and then align.

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

If fuel is leaking …
If fuel is leaking out then the parts on the engine are either not sealed or sitting properly. I would go back and ensure that everything sits flat and proper. Fuel leaking is a bad thing and is a sign that there is a defect of manufacture, damage, or the engine is not assembled or sealed properly.

Also, yes, air leaks cause high temps. But, as you said prior, it is a *new* engine. Some new engines are great and some perform poorly until broken in and tuned.

KurNorock @ 12:02 pm

I performed this …
I performed this procedure except for the needles. Now I have fuel leaking out the lsn and my engine runs like garbage. It is still a brand new engine. Not even one tank out of break in yet.

If fuel is coming out, I assume air can get in right? Somebody else told me fuel leaking there was normal.

Also, would an air leak there cause high temps, no power, and fuel being used faster than I could pour it in?

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

For the automotive …
For the automotive seal get a medium 700 degree gasket matterial seal from the automotive store. The green stuff for the needles is Associated Electronics "Green Slime".

tmaxxcowboy @ 12:02 pm

what kind of …
what kind of silicon can do you use?

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

And that goes for …
And that goes for the forum that he moderates on as he has ripped alot of people off and the forum lets those who have rippsed people off (MSG, A/Efreak, etc) on to continue to take peoples coin. I cannot support a forum that lets banned members and mods rip people off. Someone has to take a stand against BYT. If you are friends with him, or this forum, then you are in the same light. Especially when he lost 75% of his sponsors over this. I will judge accordingly.

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

I have yet to hear …
I have yet to hear a reply from you over my reply on S&W ripping people off. I will take this as you had no idea. Or, if you knew that people were paying for return services and he was pocketing the cash, then I would hope that your ethical values were above his. Either way, I will present my feedback honestly and my choice words about the service as just. But, if you dont know what you are talking about then it is best to not say anything at all. A thief is a thief and best not to deal with.

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

then I reserve the …
then I reserve the right to critique the work honestly. Which, while his first offerings were good he dropped the ball, in my opinion, on a lot of people.

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

Seeing as how his …
Seeing as how his quality went down, he didnt mod the full work, and it took over 6 months to get the engine back (after he stopped replying to emails, promised the engines out "next week", stopped answering his phone, AND DID THIS TO ALOT OF PEOPLE)

Blakhawk4 @ 12:02 pm

….were you rippin …
….were you rippin on S&W mods there?

tritonio @ 12:02 pm

it says "50 cent is …
it says "50 cent is the best, not this pussies"

Squirrelod @ 12:02 pm

air leak- Really …
air leak- Really high engine temps and hard to tune with possible fuel leaks.
car flipping- You are experiencing a lean state but it can be fixed by adding an extra loop in the fuel line.
