Make a 12 VDC power supply for RC LiPo Battery Chargers.

Model airplanes and Helicopters come with battery chargers that usually need to be charged off a 12 vdc power supply. They are rather expensive, so the manufacturers do not include them with your models. So if you want to charge your heli and plane batteries in the house instead of in your car, try making your own supply, as I demonstrate here. Thanks to one of my Subscribers, Bryan, (bjudoka1) for putting the idea in my head.
I was thinking that you could also run a wire right out of your home pc and use it at the same time.

LiPo Battery …
LiPo Battery chargers need 12 volts to run them. Some come with plugs to plug into the wall and many need a 12v battery (cigarette lighter in car) to work. This supply will work those kinds of LiPo chargers to run them, which in turn charge the LiPo Batteries.

azatecas @ 6:02 am

i don't know how to …
i don't know how to use a lipo battery charger. i mean do you charge the lipo charger or what?

coondogtheman1234 @ 6:02 am

yeah i got an old …
yeah i got an old 12 volt power supply to my portable DVD player which died (the player) and i still have the power brick and it puts out 12 volts at 3.65 amps and i do have another computer PS box but it needs a fan puts out 12 volts at 2.8 amps. and speaking of jumpstart boxes i do need a new one mine wont even charge anymore

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Of course you can …
Of course you can always buy something! This is simply for people on a budget that have old powersupplies lying around like any old computer guy does. A jumpstarter box will work too, but that is still a 12v battery that needs charged later too. This is just a cheap benchtop powersupply.

coondogtheman1234 @ 6:02 am

just get a benchtop …
just get a benchtop power supply most of them have 12v plugs and are regulated I have a 6 amp 13.8 volt bench power supply and it runs a car stereo in my bedroom, a jumpstarter box will work too wouldnt it or too many amps

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Yep. I just …
Yep. I just happened to have the power supply lying around and decided to show those who dont want to spend $30 that they don't have to.

canadianmaple09 @ 6:02 am

Or for $30 at …
Or for $30 at Canadian Tire you can buy an adapter that goes from a standard wall socket on one end to a standard 12V car cigarette lighter attachment on the other. That's what I use for all my Parkzone chargers that can't plug into the wall. No messing around with wires or building your own setup.

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Yes.
Yes.

surfwriter @ 6:02 am

It is a switched PS …
It is a switched PS…would it still need to have those jumped to power on?

Thanks for the info!

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

It could be bad, …
It could be bad, but the Black and Yellow wires as shown in the video need jumped to turn it on.

surfwriter @ 6:02 am

I have a spare …
I have a spare power supply, but when I plugged it in to see if it worked, the fan doesn't spin up and I can hear a faint buzzing from inside the PS. Do these need a load to start up? It could just be a bad PS, but thought I'd ask. Thanks! Great video by the way!!!

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

No.
No.

vios8820 @ 6:02 am

thx for the reply ^ …
thx for the reply ^_^ i mean the power supply only will it be dangerous ?

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Is what dangerous? …
Is what dangerous? Lipo Batteries can explode in fire,if not using the proper LiPo Charger. All my power supply does is RUN THE CHARGER, not charge the batteries. I've heard of no deaths yet from Lipo fires.

vios8820 @ 6:02 am

izzit dangerous ? …
izzit dangerous ? can kill ? sorry for noob question lol

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

NO! I run my …
NO! I run my computer charger off of 2 amp power supply. I charge MY GEL CELL Sealed 12v Motorcycle battery at 2 amp with an automatic auto battery charger and it will never fry at 2 amp or even 6. It tapers off, as you should know.

LUKEMELIKIAN @ 6:02 am

You charge your …
You charge your battery at 2 amp? In the video you said you charge the battery to see "how it goes.."

No good the cells will vent and fry

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Yes. Thanks. If you …
Yes. Thanks. If you have a 2.1 amp flight battery, it will charge best if you have at least that available. That is not to mean it wont charge. Lower amperage means it will still charge (trickle chargers charge, but slower) like a trickle charger. Most chargers use 12v car batteries, which of course have a lot of amps available. I charge my 12v battery with a small 2 amp charger, but use the high power battery to run my chargers. This is best.

Sebijuls @ 6:02 am

Hello sir, great …
Hello sir, great video. Just a quick question regarding PSU amperage. I'm still a bit unclear as to what relation the PSU amperage has to amperage output of the charger. If the PSU's purpose is strictly to convert AC to 12VDC then how does it amperage come into play. I have a 10A max charger does that mean that I need a minimum 10A PSU? Also could you advise what the minimum specs for a PSU for a Tiger Power 610C charger would be? I'm new to all this. Thanks for your reply.

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Most small 300w …
Most small 300w supplies put out .8 to 1 Amp. Bigger ones can put out 3 or more.

gfysag @ 6:02 am

How do you know how …
How do you know how many amps the power supply will put out? I want to use two triton jr's. Thanks

NightFlyyer @ 6:02 am

Thanks. They are …
Thanks. They are good for sure.

30GB @ 6:02 am

gotta love computer …
gotta love computer power supplys i use then all the time for projects and testing stuff

aznrevlazn @ 6:02 am

wow, i was thinking …
wow, i was thinking of this exactly. When i built my computer a few months ago i realized computers run at 12v. I was looking up on some chargers today and noticed they run at 12v. This video basically confirmed my curiosity. If i ever have the need to replace my Hyperion EOS 0606i AC/DC imma use my old Sony computer's PS.which has about 300watts if i get a charger in the future that requires a 12v PS.
